What is DigiLocker?
The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) created the cloud
document storage wallet known as DigiLocker as part of its Digital India project.
Additionally, it can be used to digitally validate your credentials.
Following the KYC authentication of a stock broker, you might, for instance, e-
sign a document or start a demat account using the papers saved in the wallet.
Businesses in this sector include Digio.
It is employed for document storage and credential verification. Your vital
documents, like your driver's licence , Aadhaar card, school transcripts,
insurance policies, and PAN card, all be safely stored with digi Locker.
Digi Locker assists in maintaining a secure digital copy of the original documents
in the cloud and makes them available for different types of authentication upon
request from the user.
Additionally, citizens can benefit from quicker government programmes , career
opportunities, educational opportunities, health care, etc. For instance, the traffic
police can check your credentials by accessing your driver's licence stored in a
Digi Locker wallet.
Google adds DigiLocker integration
In 2017, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE)
announced that, in addition to giving applicants printed copies of their ICSE and
ISC test pass certificates and marksheets, it will also make digitally signed
versions of these documents available to them through DigiLocker.
To enable users to view authenticated government-issued papers via the app,
Google has announced that it is integrating India's online document storage
provider DigiLocker with the Files app for Android.
Google announced its collaboration with the Indian government to deploy up the
DigiLocker integration within the Files app on Monday at the annual Google for
India conference. The search engine giant also revealed a machine learning-
based model that will assist in classifying and arranging vital documents such as
official papers and government identification cards.
When announcing the partnership with Google, Abhishek Singh stated, "We
expect that DigiLocker's integration and partnership on Android will provide
smoother and universal access to digitised documents in a safe and secure
manner for all our users." Singh holds the positions of MD & CEO of Digital
India Corporation (DIC), President and CEO of NeGD, and CEO of Karmayogi
Bharat.
According to Singh, DigiLocker has more than 137 million active users. According
to him, the service has more than 2,300 issuers who have produced more than
5.6 billion documents to date.
In March, DigiLocker's user base topped 100 million. To access, scan, and store
government-issued papers, it makes use of APIs.
When users will be able to use the integration is not yet exactly known by Google.
Additionally, it made no mention of whether iOS users would also be able to
enjoy the experience in the future.
Google also unveiled AI-driven enhancements for search at the eighth annual
conference, as well as an AI feature for Google Lens that would enable users to
read medical professionals' handwriting. Google also added the Courses tool to
YouTube to give content creators who are creating educational video more ways
to monetize their work.
